About Tia Cantrell, CPA
Tia Cantrell was born in the Republic of Georgia, in the seaside palm tree shaded city of Sokhumi on the Black Sea. She became a refugee at the age of 13. Her entire family was displaced as a result of a punitive post-Soviet war. Tia’s parents stayed back until the very last day and spent the rest of their lives hoping one day they would get to go back to the home they missed so much. Unfortunately, that’s one dream she has not been able to help them realize.
At 16, Tia became an exchange student and came to an American high school, completely mesmerized by the new culture. She went back to Georgia, and 5 years later her American host parents gave her an opportunity of a lifetime to come back to the US and start a new life in the States. That’s one gift that Tia can never fully repay them for. It was priceless to her.
Tia Cantrell entered college not quite sure of the path she would choose. That changed when Dr. Terrell entered her classroom. She was strong, vibrant, extremely competent with a knack to make the most complex topics easily understood. During her class she would tell stories from when she and her husband owned and operated a public accounting firm for 18 years. She shared that they would help clients from all walks of life. That was the spark that ignited the beginning of Tia’s lifelong love of accounting and finances, a critical trait that makes a true difference in delivering quality solutions to her clients to this day.
That lifelong love was also made possible by a handsome Tennessean she met along her journey. Many years later, with two little girls and their share of ups and downs, they are still going strong and Tia is confident that she wouldn’t change a thing.
In Tia’s own words:
As a young mom, and early in my career, I worked in government internal auditing, eventually transitioning to project/program management, leading large-scale financial software implementations, facilitating complex issue resolutions across teams, departments and organizations. (Boy! That’s a mouthful!)
That was all great but I couldn’t live without those numbers (it really is a curse!) so in a parallel path I supported two full-service CPA firms, true giants in their field, David Clampitt, CPA and CJ Babbit, CPA. I was truly fortunate to have had such amazing mentors. These two positions completely influenced my style and the way I approach problem resolution for my own business and individual clients today.

Tia Cantrell CPA will help you make sense of complicated topics in language you understand.
I’m Tia Cantrell CPA. Perhaps the most important thing to know about me, is that my practice really isn’t about me. My practice is about listening to YOU, small business owners and individuals about accounting, tax and personal finance related matters and applying the knowledge I’ve accumulated over the years to your specific situation. I am here to make sense of it.
You would be surprised how many times I’ve heard statements like “I’m looking at my books and I don’t understand the numbers.”
Simple setup errors could put your books completely upside down without you even knowing. So yes, the statements you hear from the accounting software providers that they are “easy to setup and run” but they are also extremely easy to unintentionally misuse.
A small number of “odd people” like me actually like to think of numbers as debits and credits. I honestly love to analyze what they mean when working with your finances.

Questions for Business Owners...
- As an innovator you already have a great product or service and your gross income shows a staggering number but does your bank account balance seem to disagree?
- How is it that your SEO and Google Ads look really strong but your conversion rate hasn’t caught up?
- What are your operating costs that seem to be eating up all that income? What portion is fixed (THEY are in control)? What portion is variable (YOU are in control)? Do you have a reasonable profit margin i.e. are you marking up your products/services sufficiently?
- What is your break-even point?
- At which point have you covered your weekly, monthly, or quarterly costs and actually start making money?
- What is your budget to actual variances and are you actively engaged in mitigating them?
- What key performance indicators do you monitor to actively assess your overall financial health?
Questions for Individuals...
- If you’ve graduated from a great school, gotten your first few professional jobs, your paycheck has certainly seen a healthy increase, why does your bank account balance seems to be a bit lack lustre?
- Got “budget”?
- Do you have an “emergency fund”?
- Do you have a solid plan for reducing and completely eliminating your debt? Do you even know that it’s possible?
- Does your rental or home own you instead of the other way around?
- Are you saving enough for retirement? For college?
- Are you able to give back, and pay it forward?
If these questions are striking a nerve I live and breathe them and would love to help you step through them.
I chose a dual path after graduating from UCO. I started out in government internal auditing, eventually transitioning to the large-scale financial software (Oracle) implementation, support and project/program management.
That was great but I couldn’t live without those numbers (I swear it’s a curse!). So in a parallel path, I supported two full service CPA firms (first Clampitt, CPA and then Babbit, CPA). All that experience taught me is that I really enjoy the people side of public accounting and helping YOU make sense of these complicated topics in language that is easy to understand.
I realize that you don’t have time to take 40 – 120 hours of continued financial and accounting education every year to stay current on most pressing issues. That’s why you need ME to do that. I can deliver that information to you in a much more concise manner timely. This is exactly why I started my own firm. I honestly LOVE all that stuff. I really do.
Last but not least, I have figured out a way to merge my two passions: travel and finances so I operate as much virtually as I do from my home office in North Bethesda, Maryland. I am happy to meet in person if the need arises but know that I am a huge believer in a secure cloud-based software that can be accessed from anywhere, where workflow optimizers allow both you and I to track the progress of our engagements. With so many choices out there I am so grateful you’re considering working with me. If you’ve been working with me for years, I’m grateful for you.

I highly recommend Creative Solutions CPA. Tia is an exceptional accountant and the biggest benefit of working with her for over 14 years is how she has truly helped get things in order for us. She provides great customer service and is very professional all the while being very timely, detailed and efficient. The credibility she carries and the accuracy with which she presents data is second to none. When our business comes across situations that we are unsure of, Tia is only a phone call away and consistently gives me the answers I need in a timely fashion.
